The Provincial Agriculturist’s Office conducted a one-day capacity development training entitled “Capacity Development for Fisherfolk Associations: Enhancing Aquaculture Capacity and Strengthening Support from Stakeholders” held on March 24, 2025 at Vencio’s Garden in Tawiran, Calapan City. The training aimed to promote sustainable aquaculture practices and enhance support for local fisherfolk.
The training was attended by 25 participants, including presidents and representatives of fisherfolks associations from across the province. The training also aimed to equip them with the technical knowledge and practical skills necessary for sustainable aquaculture production while fostering partnerships with national agencies to improve access to resources, financial aid, and market opportunities.
In his opening message, Mr. Roberto R. Abrera, OIC regional director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), expressed gratitude for the conduct of the training and emphasized the crucial role of strong collaboration between national agencies and fisherfolk associations engaged in aquaculture.
The activity featured several expert presentations, including a session from Mr. Francis Neil B. Quijano of AgriTektura, who introduced modern aquaculture technologies such as recirculating aquaculture systems and smart aquaculture innovations.
Representatives from national agencies also presented their support services for the aquaculture sector. Engr. Zaldie C. Gawad from the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) discussed grant opportunities, while Ms. Sheryll D. Montesa from BFAR, Ruelita D. Nilo from Philippine Crop Insurance Corporation (PCIC), Mr. Michael Angelo Gawad from Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP), and Ms. Hazel Gardoce from Agricultural Credit Policy Council (ACPC) outlined available financial assistance and loan programs. Ms. Ruth De Mesa from RSBSA encouraged fisherfolk to register in the national registry to ensure eligibility for future government interventions.
This training highlights the provincial government’s commitment to empowering local fisherfolk through innovation, sustainable practices, and strengthened institutional support.●
