Bansud, Oriental Mindoro

Being the primary thrust and the main source of income of the municipality, Agriculture is one of the most important sub-sectors in the economic profile of Bansud. A total of 20,407.90 hectares or 51.65 percent of the total land area of the municipality is devoted to general agricultural use. Most of the landscapes within the municipality are rice land, banana plantation, coconut, different fruit-bearing trees and vegetable production. Irrigated and fertile lands are mostly situated in the plains of lowland areas.

Crop Production and Land Utilization by type

Rice production area in the municipality has a total of 3,172.34 hectares which makes up the 15.54 percent of the total agricultural area. Rice production areas are classified into two; irrigated which constitutes 97.64 percent of the total rice production area with 3,097.42 hectares and the non-irrigated which accounts for the remaining 2.36 percent or 74.92 hectares. Irrigated areas were usually planted by hybrid rice and other high yielding variety of rice. Rice production is among the highest gross value contributor to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the municipality.

Banana is one of the most important fruit crops grown in the municipality of Bansud in terms of production. About 2.04% of the 20,407.90 hectares agricultural land equivalent to 416.5 hectares is planted to b anana, predominantly the saba variety. Banana production has an average of 3.0 metric tons per hectare and has a gross value of P24,000.00 per hectare. Cultivation is popular in either lowland or upland due to low cost of production usually zero -tillage farming technique. Large production areas are located in upland barangays of Conrazon, Manihala, Bato, Malo and Villapag-asa. Currently, banana production relies on traditional or natural farming system in which the product could be considered as naturally produced. Considering the vast banana plantation commonly scattered in the upland areas and the competitive quality that conquers the metro market, Bansud has been dubbed as “Banana King” of the province of Oriental Mindoro. It is for this reason that, Saba fresh banana is officially declared as the “One Town, One Product (OTOP)” of the municipality. The “One Town, One Product (OTOP)” serves as the identity of the municipality that brought great economic impact and support to the majority of the populace.

Coconut production with a total of 375.03 hectares is third in rank among crops that gives economic support to farmers. It has an average of yield of 1.2 metric tons of copra per hectares with gross value of P16,800.00 per hectare per year. Income from coconut may not be impressive enough but multiple or intercropping could be possibly facilitated. Production as been gradually declining every year due to its age and commercial coconut lumber production. It is not easy to replenish its area due to long period before its initial production stage.

Aside from the wide major crops plantation, local farmers also produce fruits and vegetables with planting area that ranges from backyard plots and gardens to hectares of vegetable and fruit plantations such as Rambutan, Lanzones and Mangoes. Collectively, they producesabout 1,167.75 metric tons per year with an estimated gross value of P 35,915,550.00. The common vegetables produced in the municipality are eggplant, squash; string beans and bitter melon. According to the Local Agriculture Office an average of 120 metric tons per year is generated through these agricultural activities. Spices and herbs such as hot pepper, corn pepper, ginger and other spices were also produced in the municipality but in a seasonal manner depending on the season and weather compatibility of the crop to be planted.

The abundant source of water in the low lying areas encouraged the increase of livestock and poultry production. Combined with new farming technologies, the municipality of Bansud was able to produce 1,049.81 tons of livestock despite some calamities and market fluctuations amounting to Php.117,516,980.00, a conservative estimate, due to some unrecorded sales and disposals.

Livestock production in Bansud serves as one of the main sources of income by producers and farmers. Most investors put up livestock production and finance other livestock farms usually in line with swine production and poultry. With the continuous growth of the livestock population, the Office of the Municipal Agriculturist is improving the livestock production and intervention projects to assist farmers.

Municipal Waters and Fishing Zone are characterized by a typical fishing ground to catch common fish species. Combining the catch of all available fishing vessels and gears, the fisher folks of Bansud were able to catch 225.2 metric tons of fish in the previous year 2015. Due to stiff competition as a result of the lack of Municipal Fishery Ordinance to give exclusivity to the fisher folks of Bansud, over exploitation and low fish catch has been observed and experienced that poses threat to small fisher folks in sustaining their families’ basic needs.

Considering that agriculture is the main economic activity and livelihood source of Bansudeños, several agricultural support programs and facilities were provided to aid the farmers in terms of technical assistance. There are a number of post-harvest facilities in the municipality that is agriculturally-inclined in order to support the farmers with their postharvest needs. As can be seen in Table 50, there are various rice mills, multi-purpose drying pavement and warehouses for the palay and other crop farmers while fishermen have cold storage and fish cages for their catch. There is a Bagsakan Center available in the town proper where they could trade their harvest and is currently being upgraded to better serve its clienteles.
