Four Oriental Mindoro MPAs shortlisted for the 2025 Para el MAR MPA Awards and Recognition

In recognition of outstanding marine conservation efforts, four Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Oriental Mindoro have been shortlisted for the Para el MAR MPA Awards and Recognition 2025, a biennial national event celebrating  exemplary locally-managed MPAs in the Philippines.

The Marine Protected Areas Support Network (MSN) conducted the on-site validation and documentation of  nominated MPAs during the months of May and June. The validation activities were facilitated by Provincial Agriculturist’s Office (PAgO) Fisheries Division and respective Municipal LGUs.

This year, Ranzo Fish Sanctuary (Pinamalayan), St. John the Baptist Fish Sanctuary (Pola), Punta Ilag Fish Sanctuary (San Teodoro), and Maasin Fish Sanctuary (Bulalacao) represent Oriental Mindoro.

The Para el MAR Awards recognize MPAs across various categories, including Outstanding Locally-Managed MPA, Outstanding Network, Best Mangrove Award, and Outstanding NIPAS Category. These awards aim to promote sustainable marine resource management, honor best practices in science-based governance, and encourage community involvement in protecting coastal ecosystems.

Evaluation of nominated MPAs involves a rigorous process that includes site visits, documentary assessments, and validation of means of verification (MOVs). Evaluators, sourced from various institutions and agencies with marine conservation expertise, assess biological, social, and financial aspects of MPA management.

The Para el MAR award not only showcases successful MPA governance models but also reinforces the critical role of local communities and LGUs in marine biodiversity            conservation. Oriental Mindoro’s strong representation in this year’s awards reflects the province’s commitment to safeguarding marine resources for future generations.●
