The Provincial Agriculturist’s Office (PAgO), in partnership with the Malampaya Foundation, Inc. (MFI), conducted an on-site orientation on Science-Based Mangrove Rehabilitation and Conservation on 11 July, 2025, at Barangay Tawagan, Calapan City, Oriental Mindoro. The activity forms part of the provincial government’s continuing efforts to protect and restore vital coastal and lake ecosystems.
Participants came from various sectors, including members of the Samahan ng Masisipag na Residente ng Tawagan para sa Turismo (SMARTT), Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED) students from the City College of Calapan, personnel from Cathedral Ecology, and residents of Barangay Tawagan. The diverse participation underscored the importance of multi-sectoral collaboration in advancing environmental conservation initiatives.
The orientation aimed to strengthen stakeholders’ knowledge and technical capacity by introducing science-based principles and best practices in mangrove rehabilitation and conservation. It also served as a preparatory activity for the planned planting of Rhizophora mangrove propagules along the shoreline of Caluangan Lake, a critical ecosystem that supports biodiversity and local livelihoods.
Resource persons discussed key aspects of mangrove biology and ecology, highlighting the role of mangroves in coastal protection, biodiversity conservation, carbon sequestration, and climate change mitigation. The sessions also emphasized the contribution of healthy mangrove ecosystems to sustainable fisheries and livelihood opportunities, reinforcing community stewardship, environmental responsibility, and long-term collaboration among stakeholders for effective ecosystem management and protection.●
